This is an example of a beach home on the Virginia Coast. This type of architecture is also prevalent along the Gulf Coast, seen recently in the news due to Hurricane Ike. Note the seemingly unusual placement of the laundry area. These types of floor plans are actually quite common in beach homes due to frequent clothes/bathing suit changes, and also because of the fact that the plumbing connections are easily accessible under the house.
